It is now widely accepted that we face a triple planetary crisis: Climate Change, Biodiversity Loss and Toxic Pollution, which are inextricably linked. A carbon neutral circular economy will provide solutions for all three. The Circular Future Fund focuses on companies and projects that are seeking to reduce one or more of these threats, with an emphasis on Australian entities.
Research by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation shows that 55% of the journey to net zero will be achieved by transitioning our energy systems to 100% renewable sources. The remaining 45% will be achieved by moving from the linear 'take, make, dispose' model of resource use to a circular economy (CE) where materials are kept in circulation at their highest value possible and for as long as possible.
According to CSIRO, in 2024 Australia's circularity rate - the measure of efficiency with which resources are reused and recycled within a system - is half (4%) that of the global average (8%), which itself has reduced from 9.1% in 2018, to 7.6% in 2022. Essentially, this means we are becoming less resource efficient globally, not more.
Clearly, Australia needs to do much more to help solve the triple planetary threat we are facing. We need to support local circular economy ventures NOW to contribute meaningfully to the global goal of net zero.
The groundbreaking partnership between Planet Ark and Boston Global will create transformative impact. Together, we are proud to introduce the BG Planet Ark Circular Future Fund, a joint venture that marries the knowledge and expertise of Australia's leading environmental NGO with the acumen of a world class financial institution that has a history of purpose-driven ESG investment.
This unique alliance is dedicated to accelerating the transition to a net zero, circular economy by investing in innovative, sustainable solutions. The Circular Future Fund is poised to drive impactful, sustainable growth while fostering economic resilience.
